A Head of Department (HOD) CAMO is the individual responsible for leading a Continuing Airworthiness Management Organisation (CAMO) within an airline or aviation operator. The HOD CAMO, often called a CAMO Manager, oversees maintenance planning, technical records, engineering, and reliability to ensure the airworthiness of an aircraft fleet. This role requires deep technical knowledge and familiarity with regulatory compliance, reporting directly to senior management like the Accountable Manager or Technical Director.
Key Responsibilities:
- Management and Supervision: Leads the CAMO team, ensuring adherence to departmental procedures and regulations.
- Maintenance Planning: Plans and schedules all maintenance activities to keep aircraft in a safe and airworthy state.
- Technical Oversight: Manages the aircraft's technical records and ensures all maintenance is properly documented.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Technical Background: A strong technical foundation in aircraft and maintenance methods is required, often through an engineering degree.
- Regulatory Knowledge: Must be thoroughly familiar with regulatory requirements, such as those outlined in the CAME.
- Leadership Skills: The ability to manage a team of engineers and technical staff.
- Regulatory compliance: Ensuring that all activities adhere to the standards and regulations set by aviation authorities, such as EASA or the CAA.
- Team leadership: Leading and managing the CAMO team, which includes maintenance planning, technical records, and engineering staff.
- Maintenance policy: Implementing and enforcing the maintenance policy defined by the Nominated Person Continuing Airworthiness (NPCA), which is the overall head of the continuing airworthiness function.
- Airworthiness oversight: Guaranteeing that the fleet's continuing airworthiness is managed effectively, including the rectification of defects and damages.
- Maintenance programs: Overseeing the development, approval, and effectiveness analysis of the aircraft's maintenance programs.
- Maintenance planning: Generating work packages to ensure that all required maintenance is carried out on time and to approved standards.
- Documentation and records: Ensuring the technical records are accurately maintained and kept up-to-date.
- Directive compliance: Managing the accomplishment of Airworthiness Directives (ADs) and other mandatory requirements.
- Authority liaison: Acting as a key point of contact with regulatory authorities and ensuring the company's Continuing Airworthiness Management Exposition (CAME) is approved and up-to-date.
